Tyrue “Slang” Jones
Born and raised on Chicago’s Westside, I was directly connected to experiences and aspirations of people that surrounded me.
At the early age of 3, before I learned to read or had entered school, I began drawing obsessively on everything around me. From discarded paper bags, utility bills, any piece of paper I’d find. Soon after, my focus grew toward a desire of creating imagery to tell stories. This became the most important focus in my life and I was greatly encouraged by my family to continue on this path and declared me an artist long before I understood what an artist or a career choice was.
In retrospect, my family, neighbors and community became my first fans/supporters and subject material for these visual stories as I grew in my journey as a developing artist. Now, after decades as a working professional artist, I’ve come to believe that great art isn’t just made, it’s born. Born through experience, influence and individual commitment.
